Shasank sends shock waves through NC, says Koirala cousins will run for president

Kathmandu, August 22

Nepali Congress General Secretary Shasank Koirala has sent shock waves through the party rank and file by saying that either he or his cousin Shekhar will run for party president.

Shasank’s remarks come at a time when the party, which suffered unprecedented defeat in the elections, seemed to have concentrated its efforts towards criticising Prime Minister Oli. As Oli was their common enemy, party leaders seemed to have settled their differences to present a united front against the ruling party.

Shasank’s remarks are also seen as meaningful as he had remained silent even when other leaders of the party criticised chief Sher Bahadur Deuba for the election drubbing. Leaders from the Ram Chandra Paudel faction even thought Shashank had become a Deuba ally.

“Either Shekhar da or I will contest the elections for president,” Koirala, who is the son of late leader BP Koirala, said at a programme organised in Biratnagar recently. Those present in the programme were surprised as the party will elect its new leadership after two years only.

Following the declaration, Nepali Congress leaders and cadres have intensified negotiations to make sense of what is going on.
